Just 10 weeks to real progress.

The Investment: 379€

After the 10 weeks you will be able to have a conversation about popular topics with someone in German.

How does a conversation group look like?

Why should I learn German with Tom?

There are plenty of options to learn German. Apps, AI, platforms.

And there are other organisations that offer conversation groups.

So why would you choose to learn German in a conversation group with me?

(A) You know what you get. You know me through my podcast and YouTube videos. Some of you have listened for a couple of month or even years to my podcast.

But there is another reason.

(B) I am all in when I give a lesson. I don’t squeeze the lessons in between my schedule, I am not sitting there tired or overworked, and I don’t give the same kind of lesson twice. I don’t go through the lessons like a record player again and again. And I have fun when I give lessons, private or group. I like to make jokes, I like to make people laugh. I like to not take myself and learning in general too serious. You learn when you are interested in something and when you have fun.

With an organisation, you get a system. And you are a number in that system. Here at ExpertlyGerman it is all me. You are important to me. Not a number. Once we had a lesson, I remember you. If you email me years later. I remember. If you want to meet for a coffee after we had lessons for a while, and you happen to be nearby, let’s go.

I do the same. I prefer to work with small organisations that help me to improve and build ExpertlyGerman. I like working with individuals. Because they have agency.

That is why you have lessons with me.

Why should I join a conversation group and not a curriculum based course?

If you want to learn grammar, you can find plenty of free material online. You can actually even ask AI, though it still does make mistakes. And the questions that you have can then be answered in a lesson.

If you want to prepare for an exam, then best is to join a course of the organisation that also does the exam. They often teach you their own exams.

However, learning a language is more than being able to explain grammar better than Muttersprachler or being good at passing exams. Though that can be helpful.

For me learning a language is also about living the language. Playing with the language.

Making jokes in the new language that you are learning. And being able to understand a group of native speakers when they use banter, interrupt each other and talk over each other and cut sentences short.

I also like finding different words. I do that often with the English language. When a friend uses a word that I don’t know, I ask her to explain it to me. Even in German, that happens sometimes.

Learning a language is also exploring a different world, different perspectives on how to deal with problems and behave in certain situations.

Here is a good test about how good your German is, can you insult someone in German (I am not suggesting you should) or give a really nice complement that comes from the heart?

In the beginning I offered a curriculum course, but I realised soon that this is not what people want that come to me. And frankly I also don’t enjoy giving the same kind of lesson again and again.

That is why I have a grammar guide in my membership where you can go through at your own pace.

What I do enjoy is having a conversation about topics that I find interesting. What would you do if you win in the lottery?

And it turns out that this is also what my students enjoy and motivates them to keep learning.

Learning a language is about speaking a language. So let’s have a conversation.

Tom has developed fun lessons and interesting prep, with small class sizes that let you participate fully. I definitely recommend and even plan to take another course with him! 😀

Tom has created a really challenging and engaging course which has taught me much more German in 10 weeks than in a year+ learning through apps and online programs. I highly recommend his group sessions, which I will certainly join again! Thanks Tom

I just finished the 10 week Conversation Group and it was excellent. Ein absolutes Schnäppchen. Tom is patient, and enthusiastic, and dedicated to stimulating conversation and encouraging his students to just talk and try out the language. The group I was in had only 4 total people with Tom leading. It gives you every opportunity to speak without having to be broken into breakout rooms. Tom is always there to guide and correct gently. He always does it with a sense of humor and a genuine desire to help us get better. I got to meet people from Scotland and Russia who were at my same level. It is especially important to me because I don't have people in my area who I can practice speaking with. And many of the other online opportunities are more expensive and include upwards of 10 or 12 or more people in a group, significantly reducing the opportunity to speak. This is the perfect setup for anyone who needs to improve their conversation skills. I highly recommend it and I look forward to the next 10 week group I can participate in.

Tom is an absolutely attentive teacher and very creative in the way he teaches. He enjoys teaching and it comes out in the way he excitedly conducts the lessons. He makes learning German fun, something I didn't think possible 😂. Thank you Tom for being an amazing teacher.

Tom is a wonderful teacher, methodical yet personable, who takes an interest in each of his students and their success. I thoroughly enjoyed the ten week course I took with him and feel that it greatly improved my long-dormant German skills: both my understanding of conversation and grammar and my speaking ability. Tom’s sense of humor and curiosity make learning a fun discovery and I highly recommend his course to anyone wanting to improve their level of German.

I majored in German almost forty years ago and -- because of a planned German vacation -- I needed to dust the cobwebs off my brain and relearn the language. Tom is a wonderful and patient teacher. I have enjoyed taking the conversation classes so much that I intend to continue them, which will hopefully inspire more trips to Germany! Tom makes everyone feel relaxed and the classes are great fun, as well as educational. His conversation topics are challenging and got me thinking (in German!) about a wide range of subjects, from the state of the education system to extraterrestrial life. I highly recommend Tom's classes to anyone who needs a boost in their German conversational skills. Thank you, Tom!

German can be a notoriously difficult language to learn, but Tom makes German language learning fun! I looked forward to class every week because it was a supportive, interactive space to learn and practice grammar, vocabulary, and speaking. Tom is very open and creates a comfortable learning environment, so it is easy to ask questions and you don't feel discouraged making mistakes (as we all inevitably do while learning any new language). He also is versatile with different digital technologies for language learning, which is clear with his podcast, YouTube channel, and Instagram content, but this is also present in his classes because we were exposed to games, vocabulary mind maps, and different web resources. I highly recommend Tom to anyone looking to improve their German!

I absolutely love working with Tom! I'm an architect from Romania living in Switzerland and Tom has helped me feel less like an alien around here. Tom is extremely flexible, he has accepted and encouraged my non-conventional way of learning, and has adapted so much to help me better my communication skills for my own career. Fully recommend!

Tom: Giancarlo, was denkst du über meinen Unterricht?

FAQs

Yes, correct 🙂 10 weeks. Please note, that sometimes there might be a gap because of holidays or other reasons.

  • You get 10 group lessons over 10 weeks to accelerate your speaking.
  • Every week of the conversation groups, you’ll receive an email with the topic of the week and questions to talk about, plus some homework.
  • The conversation groups are usually on a topic from the podcast.
  • In the lessons, we talk about the phrases and words from the podcast. You can ask questions if something wasn’t clear. We often do exercises alongside the podcast, and we talk about the topics. I usually send you the questions in advance, so that you can prepare.

What if you miss a session?

Life happens, and it’s totally okay if you can’t make it to every single class. Just keep in mind:

The group is sold as a full 10-session package, so I am not able to offer refunds or partial credits for missed sessions.

There are no official make-up classes, but you’re always welcome to let me know in advance if you’ll be absent.

I keep the groups small to make sure everyone gets lots of speaking time and personal attention, and this policy helps me keep that quality high for everyone.

Thanks for understanding, and I am really glad to have you with us!

  • This is the guiding principle:

    There are two common paths.
One is to study grammar rules, memorize verb tables, practice the difference between future and past tense, and prepare for written exams—often through carefully constructed but context-free sentences.

    The other?
You step into a real-life situation—maybe a bar, a meetup, or just a casual chat—and you struggle a little. But because you want to connect, belong, and keep up with the group, something clicks. You start communicating—imperfectly at first, but effectively.

In short: through play, presence, and human connection.

From what I’ve seen, the first method can help build structure, but it rarely leads to confident speaking on its own. The second? I’ve never seen someone truly commit to it and not become fluent.

  • A fun, personal experience: I think you need to have a fun and encouraging teacher in order to want to show up. And you need to show up to learn. So I’m committed to bringing you a social and friendly group call each week and to get to know you and your level so I can better tailor the group calls to make sure all needs are met.

Groups have maximum 5 participants per live group lesson. We may accept up to 6 participants by exception where demand is high.

You get the same group throughout the 10 weeks, no new joiners or changing faces. And you always get me.

Our data shows we have higher attendance & participation when groups are smaller & get to know each other. Data also shows participants get more from the course as we use more time (none lost on new intros each week), they ask more questions & are more confident.

You can cancel the 10 Week Programme for free before the start of the programme and I will give you a full refund. Even after the first session, I will give you a full refund.

After week 2 we can no longer offer refunds as we cannot backfill your place on the programme in order to fulfil our commitment to the group to ensure a great experience. You can’t get a fairer offer.

  • You must be 18 or over to participate in the 10 week programme (no exceptions).
  • You must comply with our code of conduct, this is nothing crazy it just reflects the most basic principles we ask everyone to follow to ensure everyone feels as comfortable as possible engaging & participating:
      • Be friendly & have fun
      • Be kind – everyone has a different starting point and we learn at our own paces
      • Be ready – Have mic & camera turned on for group lessons (you can pre-set your Zoom name to a nickname and blur your background) and complete your weekly learning plan so you can engage in the live content fully
      • Share only what you want to with the group

If this sounds good to you then join us and sign up now to secure your place!
